Voices from the Field- Advice for Teachers New to Using Technology
This video features several teachers with 3-5 years of teaching experience who give advice to teachers who are beginning to incorporate technology in their classroom. The advice given represents the common themes we identified from interviews with 21 relatively novice secondary mathematics teachers. The advice given can help beginning teachers of any subject have a realistic image for how they can set goals for themselves for using technology in their classroom.
The following questions can be used to guide discussion around this 4:30 minute video:
Before watching the video:
- Think about what a teacher experienced in using technology might say to others who are beginning to incorporate technology. What advice do you expect to hear?
- The quote shown from one teacher says “is technology helpful?” What do you think that means?
After watching the video:
- What advice surprised you? Why?
- Listen to a brief video interview with Dan Meyer, who shares his guiding principle in using technology as a piece of advice to those just beginning. [Also see his blog, chock full of great content and ideas!]
- Given the advice from these teachers, develop an action plan you believe is realistic for how you could begin to use technology in your future classroom.
