Teaching Algebra Chapter 3-Variables and Relationships
The transition from arithmetic to algebra is often demarcated with an increased use of variables and introduction to relationships that go beyond single operations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students often struggle with algebra because of the many ways variables are used and interpreted. Technology can be a powerful tool for assisting students in better understanding what variables are and how they can be used to make sense of complicated situations. In this chapter, different uses of variables will be highlighted while using spreadsheets, graphs, and dynamic geometry software. Ways students can reason about variables and relations between them using multiple representations will be presented.
