ESP_AF Module 1-Introduction to Noticing Student Thinking in a Technology-mediated Environment

This is an introductory module to familiarize teachers with professional noticing of students’ mathematical thinking and consider what it looks like to notice students’ thinking in a technology-mediated environment. We introduce the Noticing in a Technology-mediated Learning Environment [NITE] framework and connections between teacher noticing and the 5 practices for orchestrating productive discussions

1.1 Comparing and Contrasting Tasks and Technology

Teachers compare two Desmos activities and reflect on the ways they are similar and different. This activity is designed to build an understanding of math action technologies and how they can be used to position students as math explorers.

1.2 Introduction to Professional Noticing in a Technology Mediated Environment

Teachers explore a Desmos Activity, examine a video clip of a pair of students engaged with that activity, and then reflect on what they notice about the students’ understanding. The purpose of this task is to establish a need for defining and developing professional noticing of students’ mathematical thinking

1.3 Whole Class Discussion of Introduction to Professional Noticing in a Technology Mediated Environment

Teachers are explicitly introduced to a framework for professional noticing of students’ mathematics thinking in a technology mediated environment and consider how the framework is situated within the 5 Practices for Productive Mathematics Discussions. As part of the introduction, teachers compare carefully chosen noticing exemplars from the Quadratics Functions-making sense of “h” task.
