Bridging Communities and Classrooms: The FLIP-STEM Hub’s Design Justice Network Workshop

Friday Institute for Educational Innovation
The BB&T Room 9:30am – 4pm

Design Justice “rethinks design processes, centers people who are normally marginalized by design, and uses collaborative, creative practices to address the deepest challenges that communities face (DJN, 2023).”

On March 29th, the FLIP-STEM Research Hub hosted a Design Justice Network Workshop at The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, aiming to weave design justice principles into research and educational strategies, especially within K-12 settings. This event brought together a diverse group from NC State University, the Friday Institute, the Science House, alongside classroom teachers and students, highlighting the workshop’s focus on collaborative, community-driven practices in education and design.

The workshop delved into the core of Design Justice, advocating for community ownership of research and challenging systemic inequalities through design. Participants engaged with the “10 Principles of Design Justice,” emphasizing the importance of uplifting marginalized voices and incorporating traditional, indigenous, and local knowledge into design practices.

Through sessions on creating data stories and discussions on data visualization and skill-building, the workshop underscored the role of design justice in fostering inclusive, community-led outcomes in technology and education. This gathering set a foundation for ongoing collaboration and exploration of how design justice can transform educational environments, demonstrating the FLIP-STEM Research Hub’s commitment to promoting equitable change and empowering diverse voices in the educational sector.
