About Our Project

During the pandemic, North Carolina schools received funding to monitor students' online activity in the interest of their safety. We are following up to research how effective these efforts were, and understand the tradeoff between privacy and protection.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and North Carolina State University are collaborating to conduct an evaluation study to examine the implementation and impact of monitoring applications (e.g., GoGuardian, Gaggle, Securly, Lightspeed, etc.) in North Carolina’s K-12 schools during the pandemic. We are approaching from multiple angles, using literature review, extant data analysis, program review, surveys, and interviews, to evaluate the effectiveness of these applications.
